Sphere Break (SB)
Sphere Break is a number puzzle game from Final Fantasy X-2. Two players compete on separate 4x4 coin grids, selecting coins whose values sum to a multiple of a center target number.
How to Play
Objective
Be the first player to reach 20 points, or have the most points after 20 turns.
The Coin Grid
Each player has their own 4x4 grid of 16 coins:
[1] [2] [3] [4] <- Border coins (silver)
[5] [6] [7] [8] <- 6, 7 are Gold coins (inner)
[9] [10][11][12] <- 10, 11 are Gold coins (inner)
[13][14][15][16] <- Border coins (silver)
[Center] <- Target number (1-9)
- Border coins (silver) - The 12 outer coins. These score points when used.
- Gold coins (inner) - The 4 center coins (positions 6, 7, 10, 11). These help reach the target but give NO points.
- Center coin - Shows the target number you must multiply to.
How a Turn Works
- A center coin shows a target number (1-9)
- Select coins from your grid by clicking them
- Your selected coins must sum to a multiple of the center number
- Click Submit when you have a valid combination, or Skip if you can't find one
- Points = number of border (silver) coins you used in the combination
Example: Center number is 3. You select border coins with values 2, 4, and 3 (sum = 9, which is 3 x 3). You score 3 points because you used 3 border coins.
Gold Coins
Gold coins (inner 4) are tools to help reach the target:
- They contribute to the sum but give no points
- Use them when you need to bridge a gap to reach the right multiple
- Smart use of gold coins lets you include more border coins for higher scores
Scoring Points
- Only border (silver) coins count toward your score
- More border coins in a valid combination = more points per turn
- The goal is to maximize the number of border coins while still reaching a valid multiple
Echo System
The Echo system rewards consistency and is key to high scores.
Coin Echo
Use the same number of coins as your previous turn to trigger a Coin Echo:
- Echo bonus starts at +1 and increases each consecutive turn: +1, +2, +3...
- Breaking the pattern (using a different number of coins) resets the Echo to 0
Multiple Echo
Use a combination that results in the same multiple as the previous turn for a Multiple Echo bonus.
Chaining Echoes
Maintaining echo chains across multiple turns is the key to winning. A player who chains 5+ consecutive echoes will far outpace one who breaks chains every other turn.
Coin Refresh (End of Turn)
After each turn:
- Selected coins are removed from the grid
- Remaining coins get +1 to their value (max 9, then the coin becomes empty)
- If more than 8 coins are empty, 4 random coins are replenished
Play Modes
AI Match
- Three difficulty levels: Normal, Hard, Very Hard
- Normal AI picks random combos and occasionally skips; Very Hard AI always picks the best combo
- Difficulty affects coin selection strategy and echo chain maintenance
- Gold rewards for winning
Multiplayer Match
- Both players play simultaneously on independent grids
- See opponent's score in real-time
- Configurable score limit, turn limit, and time per turn
- ELO rating updates (tracked as SB Rank)
Controls
- Click a coin to select or deselect it
- Submit to confirm a valid combination
- Skip to pass the turn (breaks echo chains)
Tips
- Chain echoes relentlessly - Echo bonuses are the primary path to high scores
- Use gold coins strategically - They don't score but help you reach valid multiples
- Avoid skipping - Skipping breaks your echo chain and wastes a turn
- Count before submitting - Make sure your sum is actually a multiple of the center number
- Plan for coin refresh - Remember that remaining coins increment by 1 each turn
- Maximize border coins - Using 4 border coins per turn scores more than 2, even without echoes
